Abstract

Little is known about the characteristics of mobile Internet data traffic generated by modern smartphones and lap- tops. A detailed understanding of these characteristics however is crucial for the design of low-overhead protocols, the development of efficient PHY layer techniques and to actually improve user experience instead of gross transmission rates. With this paper, we want to emphasize the importance of realistic traffic modeling for wireless network evaluations. We present a sample evaluation of the application layer performance of Coordinated Multipoint transmission schemes. We use traffic models with different level of detail and show which effects can be captured by which models. Finally, we want to encourage researchers to contribute and to expand our knowlege about mobile Internet data traffic, with the ultimate goal to design better networks for the future.
