On Genetic Algorithm Methods for Fast and Efficient Multi-Layer Network Planning under Quality-of-Service Constraints

Abstract
|
The growing adoption of access technologies such as 5G and FTTx, combined with a rising demand for novel QoS-enabled services, is increasing the volume and volatility of Internet traffic in core networks. To address these challenges, network providers will be transitioning toward a more dynamic operation of these multi-layered networks enabled by a new generation of optical transmission devices offering unprecedented levels of flexibility. This requires highly efficient planning algorithms able to match shorter time scales and the increased complexity of planning tasks. Traditional algorithms are either exact and slow or fast yet deliver subpar solutions. In this thesis, we present a detailed analysis of the underlying combinatorial optimization problems and propose a method based on a highly adapted genetic algorithm that combines fast solution speed, tractability for large problems and high-quality solutions. The method is evaluated against reference algorithms using synthetic and realistic scenarios.
