Abstract

Inter-cell interference (ICI) is a major performance-limiting issue in OFDMA networks. The amount of ICI can be drastically reduced if directional antennas are used and if resource allocations are coordinated among neighboring base stations. We present an interference coordination algorithm based on main-lobe steering beamformer antennas. The algorithm is implemented in the base stations and works in a distributed way. In case a mobile terminal experiences high ICI, a base station tries to find a better resource allocation and possibly initiates a sequence of resource allocation changes in neighboring base stations. Eventually, a better resource allocation with less ICI is found. In this article, we focus on different resource allocation strategies and evaluate their impact on coordination gain.
