Abstract

In this paper, we investigate a multicast scenario in an IEEE 802.11 wireless network. Due to the unreliable nature of the multicast MAC service, a reliable transport must be realized at the application layer. As a first straightforward approach we design a transport protocol that uses an Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) method, controlled with feedback from receiving stations. Since feedback limits the scalability we propose a second approach based on Fountain Codes (FC), which gets along with less feedback from the terminals. We compare both approaches both analytically and by simulation with respect to their channel efficiency and their throughput performance, and we will show the superior performance of the proposed FC-based approach especially with respect to its scalability.
