Abstract

With upcoming mobile networks like GPRS and UMTS, mobile data communication will become available for everybody, everytime and everywhere. Other network technologies providing wireless data communication like IEEE 802.11b Wireless LANs, HIPERLAN/2, DECT, Bluetooth, etc. can supplement global mobile networks in restricted areas and in indoor environments providing higher bandwidths at lower costs. This article gives an overview of heterogeneous communication infrastructures and presents current research work of the NEXUS project on mechanisms for communication optimization in such environments. Durch die neuen Mobilfunknetztechnologien GPRS und UMTS wird mobile Datenkommunikation für jedermann zu jeder Zeit an jedem Ort möglich sein. Andere Netztechnologien wie IEEE 802.11b, HIPERLAN/2, DECT und Bluetooth können die flächendeckenden Netze in bestimmten abgegrenzten Gebieten und in Gebäuden überlagern und ergänzen. In diesem Artikel wird eine Übersicht über heterogene Netzinfrastrukturen gegeben und es werden aktuelle Forschungsarbeiten des NEXUS-Projekts über Mechanismen zur Optimierung von Kommunikationsvorgängen in solchen Umgebungen vorgestellt.
