The paper gives an overview of different architectures for photonic networks and investigates various important design and planning aspects. Moreover, the paper includes a comparison of nodes with optical cross-connect functionality focusing on different wavelength conversion concepts. Performance models for photonic cross-connects are developed and analysed.
