Abstract

The paper discusses several alternatives for the architecture of photonic networks and presents a performance evaluation. In particular, it includes a comparison of nodes with optical cross-connect functionality focusing on concepts for sharing wavelength converters among multiple fibres. Performance models are developed and analysed. The results show that in general, wavelength converters increase node performance significantly. However, at a certain degree of convertre employment, additional converters result in almost no further performance improvement.
