Abstract

Dimensioning the internal buffers of a multistage ATM switchfabric has to be based on the traffic characteristics observedinside the switch. This paper presents an approximate model forthe departure process of an output buffer which is based on a3-state Markov Chain. We also derive an explicit expression forthe correlation behaviour of the internal traffic, whichprovides a basis for obtaining the Markov Chain parameters. It
