Abstract

Environmentalist concerns, resulting regulatory measures, and increasing energy prices oblige network operators to limit the energy consumption of their networks while facing exponentially increasing traffic volumes. Due to formerly challenging transmission technology, core networks are operated statically despite significant diurnal variations in their traffic load. Technological advances now allow envisaging dynamic operation, which can potentially yield significant energy savings. This thesis develops a method for load-dependent reconfiguration of multi-layer core networks aiming at energy savings. To this end, it establishes realistic technological and operational constraints, devises a one-step reconfiguration scheme, and formulates an according optimization problem. For this problem, it proposes a mathematical and a heuristic optimization method. In addition, it systematically evaluates network configurations obtained by these methods regarding energy savings and side effects on network operation in realistic network and traffic scenarios.
